특히 대기 중 이산화탄소 농도가 약 236ppm 이하로 떨어질 경우 남극 빙상이 급격히 팽창하는 비선형적 임계 반응이 나타난다는 점을 규명했다. 현재 대기 중 이산화탄소 농도는 약 420ppm 수준으로, 산업화 이전(약 285ppm)보다 크게 높다.



중기 플라이스토세 전환기는 약 100만년 전 빙하기 주기가 더 길고 강해지기 시작한 시기다. 하지만 당시 남극 빙상이 어떤 방식으로 변화했는지는 장기간 기후 데이터 부족 등으로 명확히 밝혀지지 않았다.



"236ppm 아래서 급격 성장"…남극 빙상 민감도 변화



연구진은 미국 국립대기연구센터(NCAR)의 지구시스템모델(CESM)과 미국 펜실베이니아주립대의 빙상-빙붕 모델(PSUIM)을 결합해 지난 300만년 동안 남극 빙상이 어떻게 성장·붕괴했는지를 시뮬레이션했다.

분석 결과 초기 플라이스토세 시기의 남극 빙상은 바다 위에 떠 있는 빙붕의 확장과 축소에 따라 주로 변동했다. 그러나 약 100만년 전 이후에는 이산화탄소 감소로 인한 해양 냉각과 해수면 하강이 동시에 나타나면서 빙상 구조 자체가 달라지기 시작했다.
